Two group companies of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. (MHI) are set to begin a test programme which aims to separate, capture, and utilise carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions from a waste-to-energy (WtE) plant in Yokohama, Japan.
With the intention of realising a carbon neutral society, MHI Engineering, Ltd (MHIENG) and MHI Environmental & Chemical Engineering Co, Ltd. (MHIEC) will undertake the project alongside the city of Yokohama and Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd, with whom MHI has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding.
The test programme will see MHIENG design and manufacture a compact CO2 capture system for Yokohama’s Tsurumi WtE plant, with installation of the equipment lead by MHIEC.
CO2 will be separated and captured from the plant’s flue gas before being transported to Tokyo Gas’s Yokohama Techno Station where it will be used for a demonstration test of methanation that synthesises methane gas through a chemical reaction with hydrogen.
