Edwards to build vacuum and abatement systems facility in Asan City

Edwards is building a new manufacturing facility for vacuum and abatement systems used in the global manufacture of semiconductors at Asan City, in South Korea’s Chungcheongnam-do province.

The 15,000 sq m factory will join existing Edwards’ facilities in Cheonan, South Korea, including the new factory which opened in June to manufacture dry vacuum pumps for the semiconductor industry (Edwards’ Shanghai office is pictured).

Geert Follens, Business Area President Vacuum Technique, said, “This new investment shows our continued commitment to supporting our customers with future innovation and growth in the semiconductor industry in Korea and beyond.”

The investment will be important in ensuring the increased supply chain capacity required to support growth in the global semiconductor industry.

Construction of the new facility recently started and should be complete by the end of July 2023, with the factory expected to be fully operational during Q3 2023.

This new site will provide an increase in capacity for both the CSK and Edwards brands, part of the Atlas Copco Group, in the manufacturing of abatement and liquid delivery systems, as well as the integrated vacuum and abatement systems used in the manufacturing of the most advanced semiconductor components.

Atlas Copco has been on an acquisition spree of late, recently completing the acquisition of Montana Instruments Corporation, which was announced in August. The company provides cryostat solutions for customers involved in physics research and low temperature technology solutions.

Atlas Copco has also acquired the operating assets of Northeast Compressor, which sells air compressors, related equipment, and services to a broad range of industrial customers in upstate New York, this month.

Vagner Rego, Business Area President Compressor Technique, said, “Northeast Compressor has a strong parts and maintenance business. The acquisition will help us get closer to customers and grow our geographic coverage in upstate New York.”

It has also bought Entreprises Larry, a distributor of air compressor solutions, which has a strong presence in Québec province in Canada, and mainly serves customers in the general industry, and Precision Pneumatics and Wearside Pneumatics, two compressed air distributors and service providers in the UK.
